Come on Dave, the first election was on the back of the winter of discontent and a Callaghan government that couldn't keep the lights on, the second was on the backs of the servicemen who won the Falklands back. You could have got a chimp elected on either ticket.

Oh yes and then her own party booted her out because she was a sure fire looser for the next one

So how did she win the third?:001_tt2:

RIP Maggie.

State funeral I say!

In all seriousness I think its pretty disgusting to speak ill of the dead, whatever their politics, especially within hours of the event.

With you on that one, a true leader and if britain never had these types through history we,d be talking german

Thats a fair comment:thumbup1: I grew up in the south east so the miners dispute never affected me, i saw her as a strong leader who not only smashed the argies, but gave the unions a damn good hiding.

I'll stay out of this one except to say, she was a great lady who bought immense joy to all us. As children we all had a Mr whippy and I can picture yours smiles of joy. Maggie played a large part in the invention of it and I consider this her greatest achievement.:)

One of the main reasons they got rid of her (and she did not even loose that vote) was because she wanted less connection with Europe, but the the rest of the party wanted to get more into the EU, I think many would say she was right.

Certainly true regarding the EU connection. Look where its got us now, picking words carefully lots of people outside the uk here working and sending money from our economy back to there own and we wander why we are crisis point.

Back in the 80's people didn't struggle for money like at the moment, house prices where acceptable etc and most working citizens could afford to get on the housing ladder.

As for heavy industry that's more a case of labour killing it off.

I heard some interesting things about her today on the radio.

One was about how she had had all the children of her staff round for dinner, she had stayed up the night before and cooked all the food herself.

We often like to paint a picture of someone that suits us, many want her to be a truly evil woman, but in reality very few people are all bad or all good, we tend to all have good and bad points.

I heard that on R4 too - some excellent commentary there earlier.

So she gave the unions a damn good hiding? They were only trying to stick up for the working man (admittedly in a far too dogmatic fashion), compromise on both sides would have kept this country great, but history is always written by the victors
