Poplar stumps, groove around top just inside cambium with chain saw plunge cut a bit deeper in places and then fill groove with SBK cover with plastic or thin slice of stump cut before grooving keeps weather and pets off.

Lot of replies. Thanks a lot. Just one other thing, some of the branches on the leylandii have gone brown. What is this a sign of?

Good post. Instead of covering with plastic cut a slice befor grooving and nail it on as a cap

Could be the good old cypress aphid

 

I had thought someone in the family might have got careless with roundup in a knapsack. If it was roundup will the branched recover?

Did someone mention nesting birds.

Thats the trouble with dates 1st March to 31st July.

Seems a bit inappropriate given this years weather. Just keep an eye out and the rest is down to conscience .... oh yes.... and the law.
