been to visit my elderly folks today, they have just been presented with an electric bill for £400, most of which i can make out is from there outdated storage heaters, is there a newer type of storage heater available that is more cost effective, no gas supply to where they live, so has to be electric, and dont need the hassle of an open fire as they are both in their late 80's

I don't think new night storage heaters will be much better than old ones. Pure electric heating is always pretty close to 100% efficient so no gains to be made. I presume they are on economy 7, if not it would be worth looking into it. The ideal solution is upgrade the levels of insulation so not much heat is required. Alternatively look at air source heat pumps but be careful of dodgy salesmen promising the earth.

yea spot on i am a sparky, old heaters and new they all use the same amount of electric to make the same amount of heat, new heaters have digital thermostats,so they might be a bit more economical but not worth spending 2-300 per heater on, insulation is the only way to save on money, seal up windows doors and thick curtains

Yep get as much gov funded insulation grants as you can. If there retired they have paid enough into the system so time to get some out of it.

Insulation has come on leaps and bounds in years. Although they keep upping the thickness of it all. But can never have too much of it.

Have they thought about underfloor heating? I'm not sure on the economy of it but I love the stuff.

In Scotland retired people can get big grants to change heating systems , my old mum just got a full new gas boiler and radiators for free ( she's almost blind ) , dunno if this applies down south .

+1 my mum had a full central heating installed by warmfront did not cost her a penny. if not on mains gas may sort out the lpg tank. if you go that route prices fluctuate a lot with lpg. if you need any more info PM me
