HI MATE SO THATS what i need then 12/15ton block thanks jon

Trouble is a snatch block that is rated to 12-15 ton WLL is going to be huge and very heavy (30+kg)

Is it really practical to lug these things around in the woods?

Can't you make a judgement based on the safety factor of 4:1?

So your max pull on the winch - is 6 ton so double that to 12 when using a snatch block.

An 8 ton WLL snatch block with a safety of 4:1 is good for 32 tons before it fails!

Same with strops. They have safety factor of 7:1.

So a 5 ton strop should not fail until it hits 35 ton!

Wouldn't say an 8 ton snatch block and 5 ton strops be plenty for a 6 ton winch?

:confused1:

The winch is still only pulling 6ton max, 12 ton is exerted only at the snatch block. If it reaches 12 ton!!!

If the rope is doubled back on its self you double the power, 6 ton strain on each rope, so the block needs to be rated at OR higher than the rope, ideally higher as if something fails, you want it to be near the winch, not away from you, under tension! Although 10t should be fine with an 8t tractor, unless you use ground anchors Jon?

The comment re "factor of safety" multipliers for SWL figures is very pertinent to this discussion.

If in doubt buy a lighter/smaller block, that as suggested above somewhere fits the rope size, then test it to satisfy oneself.

If I was to use knowingly undersized tackle, I would ensure that its possible failure did not put life/lives at risk.

Common sense is a wonderful tool.

I agree with what saying, but what's the safety factor after its been used and abused, got wet, developed wear etc. And lets remember that the 6 ton cable also has a safety factor, and im sure theres guys on here snapped cables myself being one. The SF is there for a reason in respect that your kit is only new when its new:thumbup:

This is what I said! However the winch is still only delivering 6ton given its a six ton winch and not a 12 ton winch, doubling back to the winch will allow you to pull 12 ton however the clutch on the winch will fail if the winch exceeds 6ton of pull:thumbup:
