Trees and subsidence

A customer of mine has a reasonably mature holm oak situated approx. 8-10ft from his house. He fears that if the tree is felled, the rotting roots may cause subsidence. Can anyone tell me what the likelihood of this is?

Unlikely...

 

If he is on a shrinkable clay soil he could potentially suffer from the opposite, heave.

If anyone gives you a it will/it won't answer, they don't know . Their isn't a consultant in the world who can answer this without advice from a structural engineer and a geological survey.

Subsidence/heave is caused by intake/lack of intake of water in clay soil areas.

 

Nothing to do with rotting roots! Thats just rubbish!

 

A house wont subside because some roots somewhere nearby are slowly decomposing!!!

Heave unlikely, there's been extremes of wet and dry in the last few years, it would be evident by now!

Yes, but the concern was about subsidence due to rotting roots. That wont happen.
