Trees and subsidence

A customer of mine has a reasonably mature holm oak situated approx. 8-10ft from his house. He fears that if the tree is felled, the rotting roots may cause subsidence. Can anyone tell me what the likelihood of this is?

Thanks in advance

If anyone gives you a it will/it won't answer, they don't know . Their isn't a consultant in the world who can answer this without advice from a structural engineer and a geological survey.

Too many factors involved for us simple arbs to deal with

Subsidence/heave is caused by intake/lack of intake of water in clay soil areas.

Nothing to do with rotting roots! Thats just rubbish!

A house wont subside because some roots somewhere nearby are slowly decomposing!!!

But it might suffer from heave.

I think the issue is more, will the house move ( heave or subside). The publics understanding of load bearing capabilities and volumetric changes is a little lacking.

Yes, but the concern was about subsidence due to rotting roots. That wont happen.
