Fireboard every time.

Easy cut, easy fixed.

Unless you want fabricator/ welder involved?

Don't see the need really, unless steel is only option!

 

 

Insulation material does not stop bits of crap etc falluing down and getting onto the stove top.

 

Fireboard is legal if you have fitted a liner but as I understand it illegal if no liner. If it gets wet is will allow water to wick down the side of the flue pipe and sit on top of the stove.

 

Simple sheet of galvanised steel, some 90 deg angle, an angle grinder and a drill is all thats needed.

Galvanised steel is better, does not rust if it gets wet...

Galv is good but can rust in time, (though it will take longer to do so than a non-coated steel). Galvanising steel is a bonded coating only. Once the metal is cut, punctured or heavily abraised, the underlying steel is bare to the elements.

 

Steel sheets to be galvanised, used to be broadly cut to size and dipped in open tanks. Now the entire sheet is unwound from its rolled coil and fed through the process, before recoiling. Great, unlit the sheet is then cut for product. Have a look at Galv sheets that have been stored outside. Corrosion usually starts at the cut edges and around drill holes.

 

Having said all this, galv steel is still the way to go. Just treat cut edges, hole edges and deep scratches with an anti-rust compound or chemical before final fitting.

Thats all I did. No welding. The angle iron was from the old fire surround that came out when I widened the fire pplace for the burner, its fixed on three sides of the chimner and the steel plate site above and the pressure from the flue pressing down on it means it not going anywhere.

Imo easiest way is 1.5-2mm steel. Cut 30mm oversized. Small cut in each corner. Fold all edges over by 15mm by holding on 4x2 and hitting with hammer. 7mmPilot hole through folded edges. Install and drill plug and screw(6mm red plugs) through pilot holes. This needs no angle iron and is neat and simple.
