That's he sort of thing I need to be looking at making. If you can email him Jon can you ask if I can pick his brains a bit about the ins and outs of it all. A bit of background knowledge goes a very long way. Cheers mate

As has been said many times a motocross engine would be perfect 250cc 2 stroke or a 500 if you could find one. Water cooled would be fine they'll survive on one rad to save some weight.

I saw this at the apf a few years back, a cool looking beast

Thats one good looking bit of kit - if I just had the time!!

My best suggestion is stick to a motocrosser engine for a wide powerband and the power band in line with a typical chainsaw - 8-9krpm.

A race engine peaking at 16K will have a narrow powerband and be hard to keep on the boil!

Old aircooled will save the tubing and rad on a watercooled but you will lose the powervalve and a lot of power!

Looking like I may have an engine.

A Honda atv 200, but needs a carb. Not bad under 50 on ebay. But has some wiring missing, ell most of it actually, missing almost everything exept the stator. It's not much of a problem but may be hard to source the coil etc. that's something I can't make myself.

Will need to look into it. Maybe sell most of the quad parts, like wheels etc to fund getting the engine sorted.

Yea the old " Essex " engine great lump . When I was young the thing was to put one in a Ford Anglea . What a hoot !!!

Mmm, brothers mate had a Cortina with one and the rear was hard strutted - didn't corner too well but was fast in a straight line!

The bike engine looks the easiest option to me - motocrosser is the way to go!

Ok. Picked up the free quad today. Now I'm in two minds.

First it was a typo in the text, he said Honda but meant hondou. A Chinese copy of Honda, no problem just means parts are a LOT cheaper.

It's a 200cc four stroke, air cooled. Clutch activated gearbox, the quad is shaft driven so not sure what the rotation of the gearbox output is, this depends on what way the chain will spin, I hope it will go the right way, make life easy.

So the other way is keep bike as is and just rebuild it, try and get it road legal, this will require more work.....
