Changing AV mounts

I had a new customer in the shop this afternoon. He asked about chainsaw servicing, and asked if I changed the AV's on every service, as apparently his current dealer does.

I think this is a bit over the top, I check them of course, and change if required.

Do any of you have your AV,s changed on routine servicing?

I will pull the engine around while holding the handle, inspect for rips, cracks and breaking away from the steel mounts but do not change them unless faulty.

I try to get a saw back in to decent working order and not get excessive with the spare parts - anything broken, damaged or faulty gets swapped out!

Glad its not just me. This guy works for a government funded body and says that they have to be changed on service because of the employers requirement to abide by vibration levels.

Apparently this other dealer always changes them 'just in case' .

I found this strange, and very possible akin to a 'rip off'

Can quite believe it - I have a 357 that was previously owned by probably the same government funded body and it was fitted with a timer so that the user knew how long they'd been using it each session. Apparently they were only allowed to use it for so many minutes at a time before taking a break and only a certain amount of time in a full day. I was told the figures but don't remember them, other than them being low enough to wonder how theyever got any work done.

In 12 years of cutting I can only ever remember having to replace an AV about 3 times.

i was told by a council cutter they are not allowed to sharpen chains as it would no longer be an original part ie weakened and must be changed. where is this all leading to.I might start getting s/h chains though!!!!!

British waterways were trying to bring a rule in that you could use any hand held vibrating tool for 20 mins then you had to rest (do something else ) for 2 hours.

How do you check them? Last time I got involved with any HAVS monitoring they used some pretty slick kit to test the vibe levels, just looking at it or giving it a twist won't tell you anything about the vibe levels will it?

The only way a fitter could have any idea is to swap the AV part out for a new one which would in theory restore the machine to the factory defaults, not a rip off just good practice for the poor bugger spending his working day on the end of a saw. Big outfits pay a bit more attention because they have safety officers and the world is full of ambulance chasers.
