Just found this, thought I'd share it, the story is- it was 1914 and a boy locked his bike up to a tree and went to fight in the war and never came back - unfortunately I don't know anymore about it yet but will do a bit of research .

In magical land of make believe I think! I see no pedals, or scaring on the bark where it has 'grown over' the frame. Nice if it is true though...

It is a real tree and bike. Located in Vashon Island, Washington. It has had new parts added to it because it is a tourist attraction and looked previously like this:

I had wondered how there still appeared to be pressure in the front tyre after a century. :sneaky2:

That bike is never that old. The steering head and forks are much later and the bars aren't right. Good story though.

 

Front tyre appears hard because it's solid rubber.

Thats the only way to stop your bike getting stolen in Sussex.

 

If he went to war (after riding that bike) they must have been recruiting them very young!

If it is in Washington USA, then the owner wouldn't have left it there in 1914 as the US only joined the war three years later (as usual) in 1917.
