How to tie on to a straight vertical trunk when chogging down?

You choke your line around the stem with a running bowline as mentioned above and a alpine butterfly works well too. Also leave a bit of tail so after you make your cut you can loosen your flip or unclip it and rappel down to where you want your next cut to be. Once your there just give your tail a tug to loosen and it will slide down to you then cinch it back up and your ready for your next cut. Thumb Up!

Where stem diameter allows I try & use my adjustable cambium saver below my wire-core. Makes for a smooth trouble free escape/descent. Which is more than I can say for descending on a single rope after a running bowline has been tied on one end. You need something like a rope wrench or a fig 8.

Adjustable FS or a pulleysaver/ropeguide is good choking your line with a running bowline etc works well if you have something that takes some of the friction from the hitch, i personally use a monkeys tail works really well

Quick smooth bail out, minimal clutter.

i spliced another long ropeguide specifically for larger diameter wood, ie 2-4ft

Need two hands with a figure 8 though pretty sure you could manage with one, I like the idea of choking off a descender like a gri gri or a cinch or a srwp system for really quick bailout.
