Woodfuel Chip Price ?

Hi, before i start great site

 

My Parents own an ex F/C wood on their farm. Stands of corsican and hardwoods mixed with conifers. They have been approached by a contractor for woodchip production. The wood has HGV access and loading area and is within 20 miles of plant. The contractor will carry out all the work remove conifers from hardwoods, thin corsican stands and chip on site.They will pay per ton of chip delivered to plant.

 

What would be a fair price ? (no wild guesses please)They dont expect to be millionares just a fair price and dont really know market value .

Careful! Selling it for timber (pine excepted) rather than chip could be a LOT more profitable; not definately but could be. What are they offering per m3 (should be m3 for chip imo, not tonnage). Another thing; they should pay ex wood NOT delivered to plant i.e the moment it goes out your gate not when it eventually turns up at their facility. Ensure they aint expecting to stack it for ages in your wood aswell; surprise surprise when it comes to shift it it will be loads lighter hence their tonnage offer I'll bet.

 

What area and what volume you talking about? 100s or 1000s metres?

 

Market values are roughly this atleast in our area:

 

Pine for chip - not sure; last time I cut infected larch for same value was very low at £16/m3.

Other conifer: £25/m3 for firewood, £30 for log, more for good DF log.

Hardwood £40/t roadside.

 

Standing price offered will reflect cut and extract difficulty for contractor...

I would be very suspicious of a price per tonne delivered to plant. I dont know of any plants which work on that basis normally its a low assumed moisture content which is compared to an actual sample of the load and the price adjusted accordingly. Basically the power station does not pay for water.

As TCD has said, you may get more for it selling at roadside..!!

£38 a tonne near us for scots pine that is already felled, thats for biomass. As said where abouts are you if you are local to me I have a bit more relevant info. PM me if you want.

Well i know for a fact that Jenkinson's pay £6-£8 a tonne for arb chip there is someone who is on contract with quota's and he get £12/tonne. Boiler chip ie clean square chips with no greenary in it is £35/tonne and thats on contract through stobarts who are one in the same company really. But these prices are as good as they get, this guy has yards allover Lancashire and Cheshire and is moving dozens of artic loads a month.

Personally bio chip isn't sustainable and is one of the reasons that the wood price has gone up so drastically in recent yrs. I was you i wouldn't entertain letting the wood go for chip!! It's a real waste. There is alway a market for saw logs and if worst comes to worst put a wood burner in with a back boiler and enjoy free heating for you and your family free of charge for life:)

Like he said. Don't bother with chip. Far more sustainable to manage the woodland for your own heat / timber supplies (you don't give area but assume it's big enough if ex FC). It may mean more work for you or may help keep a local person busy.
