Talked 4 clients out of reducing trees this week, went for crown lift and thin for filtered light instead..

Best strategy seems to be telling the client that once the tree is topped, it has to be done continually, " I'm happy to come back every year..."

The other issue seems to be Elder Tree Fear Syndrome... Old people are scared of trees, explaining that trees grow up and explaining how trees need to bend in the wind and looking for any defects so I can reassure the the old git seems to work...:thumbup1:

You're wrong. College taught rubbish that you'll grow out of or starve to death.

Sure...we're all in for the money, isn't it?

And you can become a real fat pig if you just slay every tree you get your hands on and give'em what they want.

and about starving....well sometimes it's good not to eat much, it cleans your body and your mind too.

Good news Treepanda, and if it works just go on. Then you can't always win, sometimes it's all about compromise. :thumbup1:

I don't think we should tell the customer what they want, but surely Treepanda is right to advise customers on the implications of their request. It's just a case of how far you go with advice - if the customer is Adam Ant and you know he will get someone to do it anyway then in principles vs income - your individual choice.

Often what they want is more light, or less leaves to clear up. This can often be better achieved with a crown lift and thin.

If you are not deperate for work why not advise on what you consider to be best for the tree rather than best for your pocket????

A good reputation will spread and you'll do better in the long run - maybe even get a good reputation with the local tree officer - which will help with TPO applications.

The customer is not always right in the beginning, but with good and well-presented advice they can usually be right in the end.
