Hi there all,

Ok normally I have been quite able to fix all my mechanical problems , but this has me stumped !!!

I have a 1999 Landrover Discovery 300TDI, Manual gearbox.

My problem is that when you take your foot off of the accelerator say as you are coming up to a junction or roundabout .....there is a large gap , the same when you re-apply the accelerator ,a large gap, so it quite often `kangaroos` :confused1:

any ideas what I mean :001_huh: and what could be causing it ,

other than the above problem it seems to be running OK, apart from the gear changes are a bit `jerky` even if you try your very best to change smoothly.

any help is appreciated.

thanks

The "jerky" is a wear in the drive train.

Apply the handbrake and reach under to the drive shafts, there will be several degrees of movement in each, it's caused by wear in the diffs, axles and transfer box.

Its worth cheking the condition of the "rubber donut" on the diff flange but detecting wear in that might take more than twisting it by hand.

Edit

Just seen your location, if you pay the fare I will pop over and give it the once over for you:laugh1:

Hi there, and thanks ,

I had a shudder develop this summer and had the donut changed,

so I will check out the rest of the shafts, do you think it could be the diffs, axles and transfer box themselves ?? or just the shafts ?

just hope its not going to be too expensive.

thanks

Could well be what Treequip says. Only other possible cause might be ..

if yours has no throttle cable but the newer/improved (ha ha) fly by wire jobbies.

If tha later fly by wire could be the throttle sensor booooggering about.

It will be the diffs, if it were anything wrong with the drive shaft you would have noticed it by now, worn prop UJ's don't last long and they would have fallen off.

I don’t know if fixing the problem will be economic, diffs of a similar age will be similarly worn and new ones will be expensive

I have my pasport ready.....:laugh1:

Or its the spline problem between the gearbox and the transfer box. They modified it so there was a drilling to allow oil in. The splines wear so bad eventually the shaft is smooth and you loose drive. Symptoms are huge amount of slack when you take up the drive and go onto overrun. The people I would trust to build me a box are turners if you look on their website they have a good diagnostic section.

Transmission lash has some "cluncks" and the noise is audible even above the engine. Fly by wire lag is silent right upto the point of engagement when the clunk advises you. As the man says, get underneath and turn the shafts by hand to look for wear in the diffs, UJ's, transfer case and cog box!

Good "used" parts will be dear too!

im sure you mean ashcrofts as turners do engines not transmissions lol and the cross drilled input shaft was standard on this chaps gearbox from new !
