Nick, surely its dead money to have a lorry parked up when no work. How do you go about replacement, lorry wise?

How many days a yr does that big cat challenger of yours sit in the shed ????

If its anything like most our tractors it'll be in she'd more often than its at work, and more so with a crawler!

Our lorry and all 4 trailers would prob be worth half what that crawlers worth..

We are farmers at end day... Unit and all trailers is no diff to us than any other bit kit we have.. If its not at work every day doesn't matter..

Havin said that if I had a full time driver I could have it out 5.5 days week..

I do the work when it's there and fit it in with farm work..

There is work there every day yr... If we have no timber, plant, hay, straw or grain of our own to move then one phone call and I can get a day or weeks work with bulker.. Not best rates but it will pay better than most of our farm machines on day rate...

i`m the same with my diggers it is cheeper to leave them sat in the yard if theres no good paying work about!!!

poor paid work = 0 profit which dosent help pay the cost of maintenance!!!!

so it is cheaper not to work than go out & spend money working!!!!

a man who works for nowt will always be busy!!!!!:thumbup1:

i agree... theres hauliers running timber around all day to earn a good wage.. trouble is they are so busy doing their regular runs to the mills etc that you can never get hold of them...

we dont have that problem.. if theres no good paying work around, lorry either sits in yard or we swap trailers and do something else...

lorry and tailers are all paid for, £2300 yr insurance, £700 yr tax... £60 week dont care how long it sits in yard for...

HI NICK i say all the best to you as it cost a lot of money to keep a lorry on the road whats the price of tyres £5/600 each its not all profit is it same with logs s if you earn £7/10k a week so do football players :thumbdown:and thats and whats for a very small club mate so all the best to you jon

Nick, it just seems that when you pay 2300 for insurance and 700 road tax it wants to be on the move as much as poss surely. Have always read that the moment a wagon is parked up its loosing money. please dont take this as having a go at you am just curious as at one point was talk of getting a wagon an bulker to take our wheat away.

Yeah I no exactly what our saying and if my only source of income was from haulage then I'd be out in it full time..

But £3000 yr fixed cost is only £60 week and as part of the farm enterprise it's not a real problem...

Havin said that there's rarely a week where it doesn't do something...

Way I look at it is a £40.000 tractor with a driver goes out at £25 hr... 10 hr day £250.. I earn lot more than that with lorry with lot less outlay..

Your right John... Waiting for quote per hour from my cousin to use our plough, wearing metal and diesel with his 400hp Claas xzerion.

I'm finding it hard to find time to finish our winter ploughing and judging by his prices he's talking about I can sit in lorry all day and earn more than he'll be charging... And his tractor is £150000's worth..

£3000 a year is not bad considering some young kids pay that just to insure a 14 year old corsa. While the trucks parked up your not wearing the rubber off it. If everyone carries on treading water none of us will make money. Some jobs you just need to walk away from.
