Stop giving your logs away...

I have lost a couple of sales lately for this very reason! I fill the bulk bags up, pick them up by the loops then fill again, finally filling again when on trailer. This is a good load of wood but I still struggle when people say they can get more for less! My loads are 90% ash aswell so I refuse to give it away. New customers always comment how much more they get from me than previous suppliers though. People need educating!

I don't think the reference to the pint is relevant in that you claimed that the landlord spilt some, hence the volume has changed because of loss of product, not settling.

Actually the pint is a great example.

If the barman poured it with a 25% head, are you still getting a pint?

The glass is full at point of service yet if left for a short while you only have 0.8 of a pint.

If you look on most pint glasses the pint mark is about 7mm from the top of the glass so you get a proper pint and head on your beer. :thumbup1:

My tipper is 1.5 cu metres but it is always slightly heaped. The customer is looking for a decent heap of logs for the money. under promise and over provide. If someone wanted to challenge the amount of logs in the tipper I would be confident if they loose loaded them into a solid 1.5 cu metre box it would always be full. Yes my customers probably get 1.6 cumetres but I have allowed for that.

Thats the example I was looking for!! It's full to the top but with an awful lot more air that you really want

Difference between a bounced bag and unbounced is about .1 - .2 of a cube. I bounce all mine but have recently bought some in some of which have not been bounced. Some I refill into .2 cube bags and am going getting 4 or just over x .2 per cube bag per cm bag bought in.

I bounce and re fill, I know that if I was getting a bag that was marked as having a capacity of 1 cube and the paperwork said 1 cube then I want that bag level full at least.

get a normal bag of logs tip them out and stack them back in the bag the bag will only be 75% full.

Impossible to sell acurate amounts of a volitale changeable commodity,

weight no good because of moisture

volume no good because of log size and compaction.

number of logs no good because of log size.

As long as you and customer is happy then alls well.

I must point out before I start this reply that I am not selling logs but process them for my own use.

Last weekend I was splitting straight into builders bags along with brother in law so we got equal amounts of wood, we ended up with 4 bags each. A buiders bag is approx 1cube,i threw mine into a cubic metre wooden box and managed to get 2-1/2 bags into box, I didn't stack them but I was carefull how I threw them.

Its surprising how if you stack rather than throw the volume goes down

'Builders bags' vary though, many are only slightly over .5 m3
