can this be a reaction to the blade that cut this or oil on the blade as we sometimes get this on the cut side of aring of firewood usually elm but sometimes sycamore as said only where the blade has touched very confusing

 

I would guess that's because the saw cuts through the vessels exposing their interior and the latent mycelium to the air whereas when splitting the wood seperates along the thick cell walls with less trauma. Same reason lettuce will brown quicker if you slice it than if you tear it...

They're about 3/4", what size would be more suitable?

They look more like a few mm thick in the pics.

 

If they are 3/4" thick then that about right.

Dan, the mycelium doesn’t look like a mould ( i.e. utilising wood cell contents). It looks more like a wood-rotting fungus ( i.e. utilising the wood cell walls).

Elm does get a bit fuzzy sometimes. You've gone full blown there It's a bit strange that it's jsut one log- is it the furthest away from the door/ fresh air flow?

 

You can just brush or scrape it off, it doesn't harm the timber in the short term.
