I don't know. It maybe a mental bias. Not being overly experienced, nor a full time climber doesn't help and in the past by default I always grab the RW unless blocking down, at 175 lbs i'm on the heavy side too. I have a 200 ft of Vortex to try, I climbed on some a few months ago and liked the feel, size and low stretch, I have a heap of tree work backed up and a few hitch cords to try with the HH. 10 or 8 mm AP and a fella in the US swears by 8mm HRC.

 

 

One thing I did notice is that I had more success dialing it in on my old Tach than the replacment Teufelberger length I got, don't ask me why?

No rain today for us guys in hot and humid Norwich there was a little SRT action in the afternoon and out come the hitchhiker stripped this 45ft cedar which had about a ton of wire in it from an old crows nest! I asked Ian what the hell they feed there birds round that way, there was bits of tv aerials chicken wire the lot!!!!! I have mine set up exactly the same way Adam. I've tinkered with alternative attachments but always revert to this with the Lyon sling.

The only difference is I clip to the bridge ring now.

 

As Tony mentioned, a lot of the US guys are loving HRC hitch cord but we can't get it here.

 

Earlier on this thread someone posted a photo and video of himself using a Metolius daisy chain as a foot loop / tether combo. I have yet to try this but I think it would suit me well.

Any one else tried it?

I have a chain just never tried it. Makes perfect sense thou, no camed device (I like that idea).

That's the one Tony.

I like the idea because it avoids toothed ascenders and the minor hassle of clipping one on and off.

Let us know if you try it.

Something else we discussed previously. My use of a corner trap to hold the Oxan firm and straight.

Granted, the Oxan can still rotate in the HH but I've now found that if it's held firmly at this end, it's about 80% better overall. That's how it feels to me anyway and for only 80p.

So the last hour I've stripped the brash from a lawson cypress,

 

Seen here in between another lawson and scots pine.

 

I then tip tied into the pole removed my spikes and swung across into the pine and redirected to continue on and deadwood the pine

 

At the same time as that a carried out a dismantle on another smaller lawson cypress whist heading down

 

I left my working end of my line over a limb so it was out the way of my cutting operation, which brings me to why I'm posting in here! Some if you may or may not know that the hitchhiker has no pulley to tend slack and there's been numerous comments on here and else where of people asking or saying it can't or is it smooth tending slack? Well the answer to that is yes!! I can't fault it in that sense. Which led me to trying out leaving my working end of my line over a limb so see how it did pulling through a vertical end???

 

Ill be perfectly honest and say I had no problems what's so ever it's just as smooth as any pulley on the way down!

 

Which led me to my next question?

 

I wonder how it does in a 3:1 ratio if I pulled down on the work end of my line using the branch it was over as the leverage???

 

My answer! Absolutely no issue at all! It's not quite as smooth as a pulley in this configuration but there certainly is no flaws!
