Good post Kevin. But most of the increase in the accidents/incidents recorded are down to a stricter procedure in recording them. Years ago, I recall being told not to record an accident in the book because it makes the company look bad. We must also take into account the sheer number of people involved now in this industry. There are more saw operatives about than I can ever recall. These new folk have been fast tracked into an industry that years ago took a long while to get up the ladder in. It's now in some cases a 6week course in Arb, these guys are then trying to perform in a highly competitive field, with minimum experience.

Hypothetically, would it not make sense to learn to handle any saws properly and safely on the ground, with good footing and positioning, before even attempting to operate them up a tree? Seems everyone these days wishes to run before they can walk.

Of course we need protection from ourselves, an requiring a ticket prior to purchase is a sensible way of moderating it. It's just that those who are likely to dodge the law are going to be the very ones who won't be worrying about tickets, H&S or protective clothing.

you youngens haha, if yr getting loads of kick bk u need to get an old hand to show u how to use a saw properley ,bunch premadonna tarts these days most of you ,learn to understand the machine yr using ,have respect for it, just coz u got a ticket dosent mean yr gods gift to job ,

Yes, we collectively, not just you and me Huck. But all people. We are not deemed capable of using such a tool without receiving horrific injuries, and unfortunately some have proven this to be correct.

Your supposed to have cs 39 to buy a top handed saw as it is only to be used in the tree. not on the ground, so joe public should not need it.

Recall this being discussed before.....

 

I've never been asked for tickets, I bought a Stihl top handle from a main dealer as a young lad and wasn't asked for tickets [which I didn't have anyway]. That was getting on for 15 years ago, so it's not been common practice for a long time.

 

Kevin makes a good point that not all good training is formal and NPTC certified....
