new climbing rope

hi all new to climbing & climbing kit just got some rope to get me started but could you tell me if this should be covered cheers

The whipping doesn't need to be covered.

no,that,s absolutely normal and fine! look after it...keep it clean and dry..and it will look after you:thumbup:

Just dont damage the whipping as it could fail L.O.L.E.R.

If you did damage it you could re-do yourself but homemade ppe is a minefield.

 

I was advised by a loler inspector to put a few wraps of tape round that could easilly be removed for routine checks and the 6 mont:001_smile:hly

damaged whipping would fail loler? -we dont have loler here in NZ ( but i know what loler is).

the whipping does nothing for the structure or safety so what diff does it make?

Because in Uk we have jobsworths who look to justify their jobs by being unnecessarily picky I reckon.

A lot of tapes have glue on them that can damage the ropeabd many loler inspectors will condemn that piece of kit.

 

Tape the ends but not working parts of textiles!

Whipping does stop a splice from "pulling out" under low loads, I thought the same, the 'ahh **** it the splice is fine I'll just run it like that, that'll do' attitude within 10 mins of climbing I looked at my splice and a nice shiny bit of core popped out lool respliced and lock stitched it!

 

Lock stitch it all!!

Marlow Aries is not whipped? I do understand the splice whipping and loler but if its come out the factory without it what makes it different from one that had it but is either damaged or removed?

What glue damages the rope? is this actually an issue? ive never heard of it before-has a loler inspector ever failed a splice due to heat shrink on it? it seems absolutely ridiculous..

Whipping does nothing for security of the splice whatsoever. stitching yes, whipping no.
