This is not a rant but a note to ask that those of you in contact with the public should attempt to assist;

 

This recent publicity has not done us any favours as TOs. We are inundated with enquiries to verify either way that the residents ash tree has Chalara. I realise that the FC is responsible for this verification but it does not deflect the constant worry we are experiencing from the public. It is time consuming for us with limited resources and manpower.

 

The most popular related concern is "the ash tree is dropping its leaves"! In autumn that is quite normal but no one has actually pointed that out during all the panic and scare mongering from the media.

 

Like David has alluded; seeing the real thing up close and personal will certainlhy be giving me a better understanding and I am in contact with the FC at Alice Holt for a chance to see it. Fingers crossed.

Is it right that TOs are one of the points of contact to notify of Chalara? I've been and looked at two Ash today, one appears to have lost it's leaf due to autumn, the other is in serious decline as landscapers had raised the soil level around the base, they had tree surgeon in recently to reduce the canopy, by about one third, but couldn't work out why it has had no signs of recovery. Time wise, it hasn't had time to recover, and I know the soil level is too high, I have advised that the soil is graded back, but they'd sooner lose the tree I feel.

I met a woman today very concerend that she might lose her three ash one a magnificent specimen, and all the public ive spoken to bring it up with me without me saying a word!

 

There is a lot of concern, but also a lot of happy folk that thier trees with TPOS etc will die, especially neighbors who have loathed a tree over the fence for years.

 

People havent a bloody clue what value trees have to their lives.

Chalara has now been confirmed down my way , Carmarthen to be exact

As in Rowan, Sorbus aucuparia? Have they been confirmed, very worrying if so; I didn't think other genus were affected...

when you say 'definite reports', how were these verified?

 

I haven't heard or read of this disease crossing the Genus line.
