Hi, can anyone help? The log splitter has delveloped an oil leak from the back of the control valve. I know very little about hydraulics!

It seems to be coming out round the edge of the plasticy box part held on by 4 screws, behind which is the spring.

I took off the plasticy part, cleaned up all the joining edges, and put it back on nice ad tight, but it still drips. Is this part suposed to be oiltight? Would a dollop of instant gasket solve the problem? Or just hide something more internal?

That’s a dust cover and the oil is leaking from an "O" ring on the spool behind it.

Fixing it is a simple job and the parts cost pennies.

Take off the cover and disassemble the detent (The spring)

Now strip the handle end and the spool will pull out of the block. Replace any damaged "O" rings on the spool and re assemble.

Happy days

looks like the relief valve is there not an O ring in a groove possibly the casing has distorted and may need changing

Doesn't seem to be a relief valve or port reliefs on that single slice, my guess is oil leaking past a worn spool.

Given the application it's likley to be an open centre double acting valve, it may have a relief, possibly on the side that cant be seen, either way the problem is likley to be a damaged "O" ring.

It looks like those hoses would benefit from being replaced sooner rather than later.

Maybe while you've got it apart get a local hydro specialist to make up new ones.
