Me being a lateral.. out of the box thinking kind of guy….

 

 

It has occurred to me that drug dealers have their industry standards on weights and measures sorted out better than firewood dealers…

 

How can this be????

 

My view on the matter for what it’s worth…

 

 

Standardise the loose cube for the sake of everybody.

 

 

It doesn’t matter how you deliver it as long as you know the dimensions of your truck or trailer/bag/ bucket or tractor … whatever… Just put a loose cube in your transportation vessel for the sake of firewood men everywhere.

 

On quality… A seasoned log is a seasoned log …it’s easy. They season themselves you know.

 

Giving up and doing a builder bag is no good for the industry unless the bags are a standard size...Ideally ...a cubic metre:001_smile:

correct on it being easyer for joe public to understand how much they get when it comes to a buidlers sack , it is less than 0.7m2 am i correct ?

 

just to ask , any going rates for builders sacks of soft and hard

 

1000mm bags are 1cu metre

 

900mm bags are .73 cu metres

 

800mm bags are .51 cubic metres

Nobody is gonna sort this problem out for us, least of all some government department. No weights and measures person is gonna turn up not today and not tomorrow.

Here in France firewood is sold by the "stere", this is a unit that allows for some give or take as you will never stack the same logs to fill the same space twice.

 

The amount per stere is dictated by how long the logs are cut from billets of 1m. If 1m long, you get 1m3. If 50cm you get 0.8m3, 33cm is 0.7m3 and 25cm 0.6m3. The cost per stere remains the same, only the volume changes. this is to allow for extra effort cutting and handling. These figures are set by the government, but very few people understand this, esp ex-pats! Here in Normandy you would get about 55 euros per stere, and hardwood only! here it is illegal to sell softwood or poplar as logs...... but people don't always know the difference.

As someone who doesnt sell logs this may be a rubbish idea, its certainly NOT based on experience so shoot away.

 

Assuming the current state of confusion continues-

 

If someone is vague about what they expect or whinging about other peoples prices,

why not offer to sell it by value rather than amount ie if they say someone else is selling it for £60 a load why not offer them a 'discount' load for £55 and deliver less?

 

That way the discerning customers will still be happy -understanding what they are getting - and the 'Lidl' brigade will think they are getting a cheap deal.

 

The only problem might be when mrs 'ow much?' tells another of your customers that she got a load for less than mrs Discerning paid BUT you can explain that to mrs D.

 

It could get complicated, but why not if you are selling more?

We simplified our log business. This the last year now concentrating on our wholesale kindling business. Anyone for 200 bags of kindling

It's quite simple really

 

Logs are £180 per load

 

How many logs do I get in a load?

 

£180's worth.

 

Sell logs per m3 there is no other way, if someone doesn't at least have some idea what a cubic metre looks like then take them to the vets and have them put down, either that or just deal with intelligent customers

Just out of curiosity, and only roughly, what is the going rate for seasoned hardwood logs delivered within about 5 miles, cut and split. and what length do you cut at?

Price per cube, not "load"!
