RE; manual hubs, lock them up and forget about them. This dosnt affect anything apart from increases fuel consumption a fraction. Having to stop and lock hubs when your nearly stuck will guarentee you're stuck when you get back in!!

I had a diesel one on a K reg - nice to drive and was fairly reliable most of the time - was very thirsty and underpowered though

Think I ended up with a bad one as it dropped a big end at 90,000 miles. fitted a 2.4 turbo from a mark 4 and it went really well for 20,000 miles and then cracked it's head.

Miles more comfy than the defender but just didn't feel quite as robust. Being on leaves it handled the weight well but as has been mentioned, when empty they're not the best off road.

never had problems off road with my mk3 to be honest, its not as pokey as my mk4 but still good trucks. like chris said some of the turbo engines had problems with heads cracking, those engines were generally found in the hilux surf tho

Just in case you are still making up your mind! I had a mk3, spot on. Wee bit sluggish but reliable, moved onto mk4 now which is a treat with the turbo and is just that bit more refined. Love'em, gonna get mine converted to a tipper soon.

Good trucks, I had one for 4 years, 2.4 D non turbo.

I got it in a tatty state for right money and then had it done up, it was extremely reliable.

I used to wind the hubs in about November and wind them out about February when shooting had finished.

Well worth taking the viscous fan off and replacing with Kenlowe or similar.

It paid for itself and gave the truck a little bit more go.

I used to get 24.5 mpg before and 31 mpg all the time no matter how it was driven after fan conversion when it was on the road.

Only sold it due to arrival of child and needed a car.

Not a fan of them,But im biased to nissan patrol.

Now why they never launched the Patrol pick up over here I've no idea - that would have been my choice of truck - as much as I like a landy that would win hands down :001_cool:

I agree chriss, or the landcruiser pickup. I looked into importing one a couple of years ago but it never happened. I do think it would be a good idea, you get full 3.5 t towing capacity but in a more reliable form.
