What sort of rope?

I need a new rope for felling leaning trees back over onto our land. I have been using an old abseil rope but this is looking pretty tired these days and I do not wan't to use it until it snaps on me. Should I be looking at lowering ropes or is there another type of rope better suited to this task. I am not felling anything massive but some of the trees are maybe 16" diameter.

they cant b big trees if yr pulling over wi a compact tractor ,yr old rope would prob do ,any pics of trees

I will try and take some pictures tomorrow. You are probably rite and the old rope will do but I don't fancy having it snap and a tree sitting back on the saw or me for that matter :001_smile:

How supple is a steel winch rope as I don't climb the trees, I thread them them up with a throw line and then tie to the back of a compact tractor.

Not very. It depends on the size but, in my experience, you would struggle to form a loop less than 12" diameter by hand. I would use a strop around the tree but that isn't an option if you don't want to climb it. How about a ladder?
