Those client moments....

Knocked on a door a few weeks ago - a Thursday morning - and introduced myself: "I trimmed the magnolia in your garden last year and your husband asked me to come back this year and take some more off."

"Ah, I'm glad you're here; I've got several things I'd like you to do in the garden. David died this week".

Got two days work, paid in notes when done.

Carefull there Nepia, I have cleared 2 gardens and heavily pruned stuff very shortly after a husbands death .

At first it can be very positive as the lady feels she is doing something good, but when they come out and the place is totally diferent, the realisation kicks in and it can be very upsetting.

If the man had not been ontop of his chores due to illness then the garden may be heavy in growth so the initial feeling from the lady is prune hard .

I now opt they that've a think and get back to me on a few weeks.

Turned up to do job first thing in the morning got no answer, neighbour popped out said it was out of character for the lady to have forgotten about workmen coming, later that day police broke in and it turned out she'd been dead in her chair for 2 days.

Had a call from a very pleasant lady, agreed time to go round for quote.

Got there to be greeted by hatchet-faced misery.

She apologised for her state then said

'I thought you were the police, my 16 year old son was murdered last night'

I offered to go away and come back whenever it suits her but

she insisted that we go through the list of tree tasks. I must admit my mind wasn't on trees. What do you say?

Point taken Stevie but in this case the Mrs had always hated the Magnolia (now trimmed at ground level!) and the rest was hedgecutting, clearing a dead space and tearing six dumpy bags of ivy off the side of the house.

But she is showing a reaction: it's all go there now and when I left there was a guy laying dark laminate flooring throughout the entire downstairs of the 5-bed house.

Hopefully her resident twenty-something year old son can keep an eye on her.

After working at Mrs Divers house all week and having a standing joke between us we accidentally called her Mrs Muff when asking for the cheque.

One of those moments when you could curl up in a ball and die :001_smile:

A few years ago we used to do regular work for a Mrs Wiggan, of course there was a standing joke where we all called her Mrs Wigwam. One day another of the chaps got sent to her property to grind some stumps, and didn't know her real name was Wiggan so called her Mrs Wigwam. Sure enough the gaffer got a very angry phone call, and I'm not sure we ever worked for her again..
