stein helmet?

as a point the kask only meets en 397 and when the new regs come in it will not meet the required standard as a climbing helmet

My employer has us all climbing in a Husqvarna helmet with an elesticated chin strap, which conforms to EN 397 only. When do these new regulations come in that u mention? I have always thought that we should have some proper climbing helmets with proper chin straps that actually fasten so the helmet will stay on ur head if you take a fall in a tree. A helmet is no good whatsoever if it comes off when you hit ur head first time at 40ft. is it. By the time you hit the ground ur head is likely to have hit several other branches - Your head would be a crushed melon!!

Emailed my boss last night and informed him that we need some new climbing helmets, don't think he is gonna be happy, but imo it is the best money you can spend - we all wanna go home safely after a days work!

As an incentive, tell your boss the stein/cask helmets have a working life of 3 years (I think??), which is better than the husky which is only 2 years. I'm in a similar situation where the gaffers don't want to fork out (even though they use the afag leaflets as guidelines). They think I just want the latest and the greatest all the time, which when it comes to protecting my napper - I do!

To be honest i am usually miles ahead with health and safety and i am suprised i never actually thought about this before, an elasticated chin strap is not gonna do s*&t if you take a bad fall out of an 80ft. tree, your helmet is likely to come off long b4 u hit the ground. If my boss won't buy the helmet i will protect my head myself, and purchase the new Stein helmet. I can understand that buying 8 new helmets or so at that price is a big expence, but H and S of the employees should be paramount, and AFAG guidelines are there for a reason!!

Sciadopitys, which would be cheaper for your bosses; eight nice shiny stein helmets or having to pay out the compy and possibly jail if one of you has an accident and is seriously injured or killed?

to quote mastercard:

Eight stein helmets: £x

Employee's life: Priceless

Ok guys, this may be a stupid qustion but i'm relatively new to this game so bare with me! I'm looking at getting a new helmet, either Stein or Petzel but unsure about the legalities (if any?) when it comes to colour. I climb and ground so can I use a black/grey helmet or does it have to be high viz???

I dont think there is any guide to what colour, as long as you dont spray it or put stickers over it (the resin damages the plastic). but from a climbers point of view, the brighter the better. mine is an orange Petzel vertex vent, and I have never had any problems with it.

Yo:001_tongue:u forgot to mention you had to have yours specially made as it is xxxxxxL
