I'm sorry mate, but you miss understand the center diff.

 

On old landys and other 4x4s, the rear axle is permanently engaged, you engage the front axle to get 4X4.

 

On newer landys with "permanent 4X4" they have simple fitted a diff between the gear box and BOTH axles.

 

They are only "permanent 4X4" in so much as either axle CAN drive, if you jack up one wheel and try to set off it won't, unless you engage the center diff lock.

Ah yes- the old 'true' 4x4 system. I get that, and you are right- thats how i change spiders in the props. True 4x4 needs axle diffs i know, but my point is, that the 4x4 system in a defender etc is halfway to that compared to the other machines, and although i cant explain it tecnically, having the land rover system pisses all over any others i have tried in the size, excluding Landcruisers which have diff locks all round. Having said that though so do g-wagons, and they are worse off road than a skateboard!:001_smile:

Permanent 4 wheel drive means distributing drive torque evenly to all four wheels via diffs, lift one wheel and that torque is lost. ( 1wd )

 

Put in the centre diff lock and you have to lift two wheels to lose traction ( 2WD )

 

Put in a rear diff lock and you need to lift 3 wheels to lose traction (3wd )

 

Put in a front diff lock as well and you have to lift all four wheels to lose traction ( true 4 wd )
