My disco is being a pain at the moment. Had trouble starting in the cold so tested the glow plugs. Didn't work so got some new ones. Damn there expensive. Changed this and it wouldn't start in the morning. Not over cold but still ran battery flat.

Tried putting a wire direct from battery to each plug this morning, but when I turned the key battery was flat. Now I know the alt and charging system is working well as I have turned everything electric on and revved to see if lights dim but they stay bright.

S I guess it's a new battery. Don't think the battery has enough life left in it to turn the engine over quick enough to start it.

If I bumb it down a hill as soon as I lift the clutch it starts.

200 or 300 tdi ?

300s really seam not to loike the cold and also suffer from bad earth connections always worth trying the jump lead to from the neg terminal to the block somewhere nice and clean see if this helps also the alternator maybe going slowly if you have flat battery it may be leaking to earth slowly or its not putting out what it should good to test both the voltage and the current but you will need a clamp amp meter or battery tester or you may have a duff cell in the battery !

I'm thinking duff battery cell. The alternator is working as it should as on a short journey like form my home to work there is more than enough in battery to restart the engine. Or if I start it at home and stop in shop on the way. About 30 seconds of driving, then restart the engine turns over fine.

It's a 200tdi by the way. 1990.

What battery does anyone recommend for me?

before i would splash out on a battery i would really check the charging system with a meter or two and once warm a 200 will start just by blowing in the intact almost lol ! mine i can push start on the flat on my own !

battery wise get a good quality standard lead acid they last well and will do everything you want !

Ok. I will add it to my list of jobs for the old girl.

The battery is really old looking. It's a banner.
