Can I get done for an unsafe load if the tailgate is down?

The ride on mower we have will fit on my truck but only if the tailgate is down, I can still strap it down 100% securely and the wheels aren't perched on the tailgate or anything they are in the main pickup bed but it came to mind, can I get pulled for having an unsafe load?

Should be ok providing you have straps strong enough to hold the mower firmly in place and the tailgate isnt obscuring the lights or number plate. How do you plan on strapping it down?

I have eye loops bolted to the bed left over from when we had a demountable camper. I will put a couple of ratchet straps over the mower and onto those.

Well you could carry it on a flat with no sides whatsoever so provided the load is strapped properly and the tailgate dosent obscure the lights you should be ok.

You should be fine then. How many rachet straps do you have? When we have both big mowers (DR 13hp Field and Brush mower and BCS 13hp flail [when its fixed]) in the trailer the BCS sticks out over the back so we rachet the engine to the tying points on the trailer.

I have more than enough ratchet straps ill just have a play with them and see what works best.

 

Good point about the flat bed though. The only thing the tailgate might block view of is the number plate but I have a spare one ill hang from the mower.

I think there used to be a pick up version of the Mini where the lights were in the sides of the pick up bed, but the number plate was in the centre of the tailgate. I think the plat used to be hinged along the top edge and secured with a clip at the bottom, if running with the tailgate down you released the clip and the plate hung vertically.

 

It was presumably legal to transport a load with the tailgate down then, but legislation may have moved on a bit since Mini last made a pick up.

Cracking little motor they were,a millionaire farmer from the village had a blue one back in the 70's when I was a kid, I still remember his black lab in the back, ah those were the days.

 

I saw a mint Morris Traveller today down the marina, the paint was tatty but the body and woodwork was very sound..

the tailgate on most pickups is designed to be a part of the load bed, as long as the load is secured, you wont have a problem

Take it off if possible and carry it on the trailer.
