new law on towing

just heard next year a new law allows new drivers to tow trailers over 750kg without having to pass a trailer test and that drivers previous to this new law will also be able too.

Can anyone confirm this or is it a load of horse manure ?

Didn't mean to come across like that, just that if they were going to scrap it I wouldn't have done my test to get the extra ticket.

 

I would actually think that keeping the ticket, even though it seems a bit of a money spinner, actually keeps the bigger trailers towed by more experienced people and people trained for it. Seen some appalling efforts recently which were just dangerous.

just been looking it up and as long as your gtw does not exceed 3.5t you wont need to take a futher test.

My disco and trailer goes over 6 tonne gtw but I am alright as I am far too old to take a trailer test.

Existing car or small vehicle drivers

 

If you already have a licence to drive cars or small vehicles (category B and BE), you'll keep your entitlement to tow trailers. Your entitlement to tow trailers will stay as it was when you passed your driving test.

 

To tow heavier trailers after 19 January 2013, you'll need to follow the rules for new drivers, below.

 

 

New drivers from 19 January 2013

 

Category B

 

There is no change to category B entitlement to tow trailers.

 

Category BE

 

If your trailer weighs over 750 kg and the combined trailer and towing vehicle weight is more than 3,500 kg, you’ll need to pass a further test. The trailer you tow must not be heavier than 3,500 kg. This test will be shown on your driving licence as category BE.
