Log grab not working

Hi

 

Slight mishap with the log grab yesterday. Its an Albutt log grab.

 

i caught one of the grabs on the top of a log while driving and there was a loud noise and now it doesn't open or close. It's not the on the tractor side as other buckets work on the aux circuit.

 

So whats wrong there isn't hydraulic oil pissing out the cylinders and the top seals look good and the rods look straight too. What am i missing and whats wrong with it.

Can you hear the relief valve operating, perhaps the grab has been damaged and jammed??

I would imagine that the end may have snapped off the rod.

Not had a really good look around it yet. I couldn't see a pressure relief valve on the grab on my quick look over. I fear it doesn't have one which is what caused the problem.

 

I fear it may be the end of the rod.

Sounds like the end of the rod blown off to me, I had that happen on my crane log grab.

Could be internal seals in the ram, although when mine have gone the grab works badly for a while before packing up, but there is no leakage.

 

Cost me around £100 to have it resealed.

It did manage to close.

 

Think i'm going to plumb it up feed return on each ram see what happens then. Might drain off the one that doesn't work. If it rattles and lifts easly its the rod if it dont it the seals.

could also be the centre post seals on the rotor if the piston has broken the thread inside it take the rod end pin out and the rod will probably come out in your hand if its the seals that have gone in the cyl take hose of the rodend of the cal and blank the hose if its bypassing there will be a heavy flow of oil out of the port on the cyl
