I know but most of their bigger trailers are 3500kg, thats O licence territory. 3499kg and below is Tacho only.

If you are towing a trailer plated at more than 3500kg you can only be doing it (legally) with a vehicle that's on an "O" licence so it's a bit of a moot point. If you are an "O" licence holder (uk national), recent changes mean you now need to have trailers 3500kg and under on your licence.

If you do come under drivers hours legislation the responsibility is recording, tachograph is the default option but if you don't have one fitted a manual record is perfectly acceptable.

If you think it will be a problem you can re plate it yourself with an ally plate and a couple of pop rivets.

It can certainly be downplated yes but I think the new plate needs to come from the trailer manufacturer. I used to be in the HGV industry, to downrate a 5th wheel coupling from say 32t to 28t needs an id plate from the coupling manufacturer. The coupling manufacturer also sent instructions on how to downrate or uprate ( add extra bolts) and supplied any necessary extra bolts in the kit with the plate.

Treequip,

Your comments above seem to suggest that a trailer rated at 3500kg does maybe not require O lic etc and 3501kg does. I thought ( but am quite happy to be corrected) that 3500kg was O lic and 3499kg was not.

I am looking to add another trailer next year, the ones I am looking at are all 3500, I will want less than that, pulling with a tacho fitted Disco, no O lic etc. Was thinking fo having one built at 3300, only going to carry about 3 cube of logs so actual weight is not really an issue.

Ifor williams trailers will always sell after you have finished with them !!bought one off ebay had two years sold it for the same price i bought it for>Then bought a new one for about £ 2500 before vat mesh side and all > Do you home work and get the deal its up to you to do it !!!

You could get a deal like that about 4 years ago now you will be lucky to get 10% off list price. List for a tipping ifor with mesh sides is about 4k + vat

I was using the rounded figures that are commonly quoted, the point I was making was if you have a trailer mam in excess of 3499 (3500 in rounded figures) then the only thing you,can tow it with is a vehicle that's on an O licence so the licence aspect is moot. Just add the trailer to the licence you have.

Changing the rating on a 5th wheel coupling is not a particularly good example, it's a component in a complex assembly, the rating on the trailer is more what is under discussion.

As for getting a trailer built to 3300 kg, just buy a stock trailer and change the plate, as Pete says you can use crayon if you want.
