If you do endup around Chch try out by banks peninsula, Te whare karakia Onuku marae is where me and the wifey got married. Lovely place.

4 weeks is not going to be enough, on my first trip I went out for 2-3 months and stayed 6................ Then I went back again for longer, never should have come back.

If you like to surf check out Raglan in north Island, left hand break and said to be the best in the world, just not in the pishing rain and ridiculous wind!!

You'll love the place.

Milford sound is rated one of Te worlds great wonders- def worth a visit and stay in the cabins en route. The sound is home to very rare dolphins.

Reason I advised against Milford, It is such a long way round by road and you are only a month in NZ. But its worth it There is alot of other stuff you could do in the same time.

Tip on flights> Ive flown cathay pacific which were excellent via Hong Kong.

Air NZ also via HK ok but not as good cabin service I thought.

Both these were 747 Jumbos.

Then last time Royal Brunei was cheapest. A 737 twin engine London all the way to Auckland 32 hrs with needed fuel stops in Dubai, Brunel darsalem and Brisbane Australia. Each take off was preceded by a prayer to Allah played in Arabic over the tanoy and displayed on the screens in English and Arabic

All the way the in flight info pointed towards Mecca not north or south and it seemed we took detours over interesting places such as Baghdad, Bhopal etc.

No alcohol in flight.

Before landing in Brunei it introduced us to the place.. Jungles, culture etc. then if caught with non prescription drugs penalty death and if any munitions even an empty bullet shell on a necklace that was dealt with accordingly.

All this is fact of my 2009 experience.

Just thought I'd post if anyone fancies something a little different.

Thanks for all the great feedback and advice everyone on travelling around new zealand. Still after a bit work advice, our month there is nothing more than a holiday really but if we love it enough then a year out there working is on the cards further down the line. Is it worth me taking my kit just to do a days work for someone so that i can get my foot in the door for us to go back and get visa sponsorship etc? Or can you apply for work Visas without having a sponsor? If anyone knows the best way to sort work out over there it would be great help.

Thanks

Tom

Dunedin is a **** hole (I live there) but drive south through the catlins is pretty cool, west into Central Otago/ Queenstown if you want to get on the piss with a whole lot of other poms... Christchurch wasn't much before the earthquakes but The east coast of the south island north of Christchurch is pretty cool.Although Decemeber is officially summer it often rains and every fkkr is on holiday... february once the kids go back to school, quieter and less people about...

Arborists are on the skills shortage list with immigration, you should not have much trouble getting a job... check out Buy online and sell with NZ's #1 auction & classifieds site | Trade Me and search arborist....
