things are getting desperate!

Thing is, if there's no work, there's no work. Doesn't matter how many people you ring. I get loads of CV's sent and quite a few calls too, its sad to think how many guys there are out there looking at the moment.

IMO there has been a bit of a perfect storm as far as tree work is concerned:

Firstly there has been a downturn in the housing market, 5 years ago I recon 50% of the domestic work that I did was for people who were A. just about to sell, B. just bought, or C. drawn down on mortgage to build extension/garden makeover/decking etc.

With 50% of the market now gone the next part of the storm kicks in, after 10 years of growth the number of people getting into tree work spiked, colleges turning out hundreds of fresh new graduates each year. These youngsters, unable to find the work they were promised began doing jobs on their own or with their mates, and began undercutting the established firms. Who can blame them!

The established firms, seeing their workload shrink due to the fall in domestic jobs, and the downturn in the building trade, ( we used to do a fair bit of site clearance, not any more) found that they were loosing money. Their workload had fallen and they were having to cut prices ever lower in order to compete, so they began to lay off staff... who, unable to find work, began working on their own further driving down prices and so the cycle continues..

I hope you find something... and although I said there is no work, that wasn't true. There is just a lot less work. Keep ringing round and eventually something will happen.

Exactly right, even if through your persistent hard work you manage to get a few days a month, you'll feel pleased... but is it enough to call it an income, is it enough to go out for meals with the mrs and still pay the mortgage?

Full time jobs are so few and far between its unreal, and self employment is just about impossible unless your established for the reason Tom D states above...

For those of you persisting I wish you luck, you'll need it.

Exactly, and Im sure its a cool life style...

But I can guess what would happen if you went into a bank and asked for a mortgage, or found out you've made one person into 2 by sowing your wild oats

You have to remember most people on here are 20's, 30's or 40's with responsibilities, thats when it gets harder and more impossible.

Its been 3 years almost since my last full time job! Had to move home to Glasgow from wales as couldnt afford to pay rent, bills etc anymore. I thought that moving home would give me a better chance to find full time work. But still nothing:thumbdown:. Now im lucky if i can get a few days work in a month! Iv sent out my cv to all the companies i can find near me, sent emails etc. Iv even tried to find companies down near Bournemouth where the rents have a holiday home and still nothing. What am i doing wrong?/ what more can i do? Im going stir crazy not being able to work! Any help would be great guys,

Cheers

Paul

Hi there I really feel for you . My advice would be of you can get some tools a strimmer and what else you can get together some cards made up and go meet the people . If you have the drive the work will come in . Every person you meet in a day will most lightly have trees and a garden it's amazing how much opportunity there really is if you are prepaired to dig for it . You need to be like a dog with a bone .

You can get free advertising at most of the places you either shop or eat at just by chatting to the owner I find it really easy to get my cards in Down your local is a good one

. If you have some old stuff to get rid of do a car boot sale have your cards at the ready it's a great way to get rid of old stuff For some cash and get free advertising through just chatting and giving out your cards .

If y can travel and are happy to kip in you car or van then there is lots of sunny work on hear to be had up and down the country

Have a think about what other skills you have ? Do you have any other tickets ie cherry picker , PTS , 360 . IRATA . Can y drive 7.5 tone trucks . If you have several things you can turn your hand to it will give you more work opptunitys .

I think the full time job thing is not going to happe that fast , being self employed in charge of your own desterny is the way forward .

I really wish u all the best

Littletree
