The Beauty & Wonderfulness of the Sling

The slings I have at the moment are:

Lyon 25mm x 100cm Endless Sling £3.80 ex Vat

Lyon 25mm x 150cm Endless Sling £4.80 ex Vat

The Safety Goggles I like and get from Clarks are:

Optema Safety Glasses Clear Lense £2.85 ex Vat.

I seem to be going longer and longer as you can see the 150cm sling next to the one it replaced in the pic. My main use is holding branches that I cut and allow to dangle, so.. long is good for this.

I tie a knot to hold the crab in place which is the weak link at 10kn whereas the sling is 30kn without the knot. So I'm not doing mahoosive bits with it.

The glasses are wrap around and adjustable so you can squish them against your face and really keep the dust out. They have little hinges on the arms so they actually tilt to fit really snug.

Why not just choke them on the biners?

Don't knot them ever - it reduces there strength massively. Larks foot if you need to have a captive attachment

I will add that if using them to cut and hold a knot will NOT reduce their strength enough to be a worry, youll pull your arm out of your socket before the sling snaps due to the knots!

so "ever" is a little over cautious.

Yeah but why tie a knot in a sling?

There is no need and it's bad practice IMO.

Albedo: Thanks for that :thumbup1:. Really great post, and a lot of help. Slings seem a lot more popular now then when I was working. I never saw anyone use them, but they seem to be versatile bits of kit.

Nice touch to add your glasses, really helpful. Again, safety glasses seem to have become more popular in the last 10 years. I only ever wore them when facing up high conifer hedges, as it stops all the trimmings getting in your eyes when you look up.

Has anyone used these:

Bolle tracker safety spec

Was thinking of getting a pair once I return and get working.

Either knotting or larksfooting will reduce strength dramatically, particularly in dyneema slings. Just a case of knowing the limits of your kit in any given situation.
