need a new rope

I am after buying a new climbing rope, what would you guys reccomend? i have always used 13 mm (been told it's cart rope) i know alot use the thinner stuff, hows it compare to the 13mm stuff, does a prussik or split tail bite as well on the thin stuff? and what do you thing i should get....

Hi.

You need to buy some 11 mm Velocity (from Samson). That is the best rope i have ever had! I use it every day. The 11 mm is much easier to climb on. And it is much lighter that a 13 mm rope. I use a 10mm Softheat prussik (VT). It works really well on the 11mm Velocity. http://www.freeworker.de/store/seile/klemmknotenseile/soft-heat.html

I think the only disadvantage of an 11mm rope is when it is really whet and slimy - it it harder to grib the rope the thinner rope. I sometimes swich to my old 13mm rope when it is really nasty.

I have a 50 meter 11 mm and it is useless! It behaves like it is 30% dynamic. Impossible to climb on and a disaster for footlocking.

I used it for a week, and then disided to buy an extra velocity rope.

 

By the way it is Christmas in a couple of days - and I have 12 days off!

I use Yale xtc, one of the best ropes I've used. I tried Tachyon but found it too thin for me. I also have try'd New England Hi Viz but found that, it twist a hell of alot.

 

The next rope im going to try is the Yale Blaze.

I use Yale XTCPlus Fire I think its a really nice rope

I wouldnt want to use anything thinner tbh and I dont understand how or why thinner rope is better?

I use a tachyon which is my first 11mm rope and i love it,seems alot more gentle on my hands than the 13mm ropes. If its wet and slimey though then i break my edelrid x-perience rope out which is a very good rope too which is 12mm. Use a lock jack and hitch climber on both ropes,both work very well. You could always just pick the rope thats your favourite coulor which is wot one of our climbers does haha.

If Tachyon was too thin for you i would consider a different rope to blaze as blaze is thinner than Tachyon

the thinner the rope the more "wippy" it is, enabling easier negotiations of stubs etc, when flicking it round.

you cant go wrong with the yale xtc range,the 12m edelrid x-perience is also a nice rope and compromise for size and works well with lockjacks as well,new england ropes tachyon and fly are decent ropes if you like 11mm lines but for me peronally evan though i climb on all of them i would say the best all rounder would be the xtc-scorch..the thing i dont like about 11m lines is i need gloves for them and it costs me a small fortune in buying the grippy ones that work best with it....and i dont like wearing gloves!

I use 8mm hitch cord on all my ropes.

I'm loving the Yale Scorch at the moment, very nice line. Its very like an XTC, but seems to have a tighter weave.
