Right, 1/4 inch is the chain pitch, not the file size.

yus, got there eventually looks like 5/32 files

see...this is why this forum is handy! i would have bought a big fat file and discover it was WAy too big

I feel the same, it sounds somewhat large. its a stihl chain marked as:

chain pitch : 1/4"

 

(stihl item code 3661 003 0056)

is possible i am being daft but to me that means i need a 1/4" file no?

 

 

You have a 1/4" chain but the file size you need will be 5/32" max but even better 3.5mm - very small. 1/4" files are massive!
