Big leaning Ash.

Iv been asked to take down a big ash with about a 40 degree lean on it. It is in privately owned woodland, The lean came about due to high winds causing it to slightly uproot. Its a ticking time bomb if you ask me. Its about 0.70m across at the bottom and a fair few tonnes of wood in it.

My question is, how would you guys go about doing it? My thoughts are obviously put the gob in and bore out the middle leaving a fair bit of holding wood, then nik that out to drop the tree.

The reason i ask is that iv had a large ash split on me before even though the lean wasnt bad at all. Only about 10 degrees. Im a confident cutter but for some reason this one has given me the fear.

 

Any advice would be great, Ill put some pictures up tomorrow as i forgot my camera today.

Don't leave too thick a hinge, or it will split. I would dog tooth it if it is leaning. Or let it fall by itself which would be the safest option assuming there is no footpaths or road near by

If need be (for confidence), wrap the stem with some chain (or rope if you don't have any). Then as has been said, make some careful but purposefull cuts & release with a dog tooth.

I'd be more concerned about it lifting the plate than splitting if it has already gone 40 degrees.

Cheers for the replies lads, Its nice to know that arb talkers like to look after their own. Dog tooth was the road i was going to go down. May take a trip to halfords tomorrow and buy a ratchet strap for and extra bit of security. Plus its a chance to buy something nice and shiney:thumbup:
