Built in 1962 in Glasgow, once the tallest residential tower blocks in Europe, demolition started on them yesterday - this triple block was brought down in an unusual way due to the steel frame construction and the sheer size of the building

unofficial vid, skip to around .24 you can see how they blasted the lower right side similar to making a notch in a tree (much the same way Fred Dibnah would bring down Victorian brick chimneys, by making a notch)

Skip to around 7.20 in this vid, Fred had made a notch on the far side of the chimney inserted wooden support blocks then started a fire to burn them away, basically making a directional notch  -

Even in those days there was some H&S. The sad thing about fred is that he was old school and cheaper than the "pros" of the day who would have used explosives.

We love watching him work, but then we moan about people getting cheap treeworkers in to do our jobs. Fred was not much different, proffessional firms were around in those days but he was just cheap! And the police etc who were there at the time wouldnt have known any different so it went ahead.

Fred Dibnah was a hero of mine.as a kid i was fascinated by his passion for his work and his steam traction engine and his Knowledge of machinery throughout history...He once said that he swapped Steeplejacking for standing in front of the camera...the famous film of him sounding his horn and Scarpering out of the way of a falling chimney stack is classic "Fred"...check him out on you tube installing ladders all the way up the chimney...nobody does it like Dibnah anymore...
