Western redcedar

any experiences with burning western redcedar (Thuja plicata)?

Have had people tell me it's good for kindling, not tried it myself yet, no light to shed on logs, but best guess is good kindling = hot fast burning logs.

Carvers love it, cos it lasts for ages. Used to make shingles too. It'll be pretty resinous so probably good kindling.

I've got a load of WRC which I split for kindling..it's the best I've ever used. Logs really do spit, though.

any particular reasons ?sold a few loads of it this year mixed up with other stuff, figure its gotta be better than leylandii!

My experience is that when well seasoned it burns fairly fast and hot, smells great, throws sparks but is just fine in the woodturner if dry.  Would recommend with these provisos

I'm with the long gone Mr Ed: crap firewood.  It spits, it cracks (though some people like the sound), burns in moments and I find gives out very little heat in that time.

Any wood's good kindling if dry and small enough.

 

I thought I was going to have to burn my way through a couple of dumpy bags of offcuts, along with longer pieces, left over from having the house re-clad but Men In Sheds are getting it 👍

I burn exclusively softwood at home; if I was offered a load of WRC I'd politely decline it
