Don't get me wrong guys, I'm not an advocate for doing things on the cheap, you need to put my £100 into perspective! 75% of the people on here would have done what I did in an hour, so £100 for the job was probably fair....

so how did you make an hours job last 3.5hr?

OMG im so expensive!

We charge £250 - £300 for a morning and £500 - £600 for a full day

£100 for 3 1/2 hours work??? Surly not!!

That's what it should be for a decent team! I've noticed I've lost alot more jobs than usual this year because of undercutting!

-Was looking in the Friday ad yesterday and someone is selling seasoned hardwood for £35 a cube!?

I worked Monday with £40 labour

I worked Tuesday with £100 labour

We had Wednesday off

I worked Thursday with £140 Labour

and turned over £2950

not a bad week...

This is all good and well but the most important thing is profit!

My outgoings are high as I like to have good kit and a nice house and a nice car, everybody likes different ways of living and if your business allows that lifestyle then big pat on the back for you guys/gals!

Don't loose any sleep about it mate, they're probably shitting you about the other quote. I don't take a tree down for less that £180 because you need two climbers. I always make a point about PL insurance, responsible disposal of arrisings, kit costs etc. You can't do anything more than that and hope people look at things pragmatically and have a conscience. I found a conifer hedge in a ditch the other day roots and all, I quoted £80 for the job!!!!.

I went yesterdat to price a tree removal. Arrived at the job, narrow acess tree in rear 35ft pine relatively straightforward. Priced it at what i see as a reasonable £125. Was called later to say someone else had quoted £75..

If all went well it was at least a couple of hours work, plus van chipper fuel, understudy etc.. Am i that far out?? Has anyone else a view to share?

All comments Appreciated.. ta:001_huh:

I think its the same everywhere

people are working for half the money/day than we are pricing at. And I always felt that we should up our prices. but then everybodies running costs are different.

Let them, and try not to get frustrated by it.

everyone out there is struggling at the moment and it shows.

Ive priced lots of jobs over the last few months that havent been carried out by anyone.

I priced a row of conifers to be removed at £1450 the other day and client said that he had recieved quotes under £900 - but wait for it his budget was £750 and was going to offer the work to the lucky contractor if he would do it for that.

I recieved a text message from him later that day sent to me by him by mistake suggesting that the other contractor had taken the bait (- I let him know that he'd sent it to the wrong guy).

That's spot on Chris, but as a minimum charge.

I take the view that it costs me £90 just to walk out to my truck and start the engine. Why would I then drive 15 minutes to then work for 1-2hrs for £120?

For a job to be less than £160+vat it has to be on route to a bigger job and take less than 30mins. Simple.
