Tractor Skidding Winch Rope?

Hi all, we're having to replace the rope on a Norse skidding winch, does anybody know what to replace it with?!

 

We've looked at the Marlow Dyneema rope but it is super expensive! Is there decent alternatives? and I'm not sure what diameter we need to get, the one that being replaced looks about 8mm, we want to get 100m length of it so the price soon adds up!

 

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated!

HI ARB we run wire rope 11mm on our 5,5ton winch 110mt long the price 3 years ago i think was £130 inc vat all the best jon

I hear plasma rope is the nuts. The EA use it in all their winches and some of those are massive.

 

Any reason you are going for rope over steel cable?

plasma won't resist the abrasion of skidding timber like steel, its lighter and floats on water but abrasion wise its not so good.

I didn't know steel cable was that much cheaper!

 

Its just that rope is what we are used to - its light, easy to run around with, easy on the hands, and safer if it snaps i guess! And it has a higher breaking strain by diameter to steel. but now just realised its 10 x the price!

So what's the pros for steel?

mega bucks for plasma 12 stand we used 11mm / 100ft from Andy at Ruftraks when off roading... never broke one yet:)

Think I may switch to steel to save on the pocket

The Plasma is a fair bit cheaper than the Dyneema, but may switch to steel for the price- would the steel cable run through a butterfly pulley alright?

So what's the pros for steel?

 

Its cheaper

resists abrasion and subsequent heat better

you can splice it

it does not degrade from UV,Chemical exposure

it is more resistant to cuts and crushing
