Cheers guys glad you like it,

It failed in the knot, core was majorly glazed/melted at failure point.

I'll dissect the splice and see whats happened there.

So is a knot failure a case of "heat" failure, ie the rope burned through, rather than a "breaking strength" failure (fibres simply snapping) ? :confused1:

doesnt suprise me - no strength loss in a splice - when I went to collage many years ago we were taught knots reduce the strength by upto 50% except a bowline which is considerably less.

This was 25yrs ago mind

I would like to know if there are any new knots since this time, that are better on strength?

Even a less than perfect splice will be stronger than ANY knot you can tie that is not too bulky, theres a few knots we use in big game/braided lines that reduce the issues with dyneemas etc but youll never ever in a zillion years beat a splice, period.

If you take the time to look there is plenty of research out there on knots and ropes and if you take the time, youll be binning knots for terminations!

A less than perfect splice is a splice that should be cut off- and may very well be weaker than a knot. Through the test we've done the fishermans has always choked the rope to point of cutting through itself-but modern ropes are so strong that even this is something that I wouldn't worry about. But I agree with tony, get stuff spliced properly and bin the knots!!!
