  1. Hello, I am looking for an NPTC assessor to conduct a CS38 assessment in the Edinburgh area. I am just looking for the assessment as I already have adequete training. I can provide a site, LOLER certified kit and second climber if that would make things any easier; I am trying to get this sorted ASAP. I have tried a few local providers, to no avail, so thought I'd try here. So if you are an NPTC assessor based in or around Edinburgh and are willing to provide an assessment only service, please get in touch!! Thanks, Chris
  2. Some nice comb-over action in pic two!
  3. Pleurotus ostreatus (the white/ grey ones) Laetiporus sulphureus (the yellow one) And Ganoderma spp on the beech in the last pics. Looks like a nice spot
  4. Most of my time is taken up by working, uni, and volunteering. Other than that I enjoy taking photos and walking around in nice places, two hobbies which fit together nicely. Since surgery on my (dominant) left hand I have been learning to write and draw with my right hand. I also enjoy reading and occasionally getting out on my bike. I tried my hand at splicing but that is on hold for the moment. I can also say "Hello" in Chinese.
  5. The last three pictures there are awesome!
  6. How many states of the USA can you recall in 10 minutes? Harder than it sounds... I got 39 out of 50 this morning, did have a couple of goes last night though! Have a go and post the results U.S. States Quiz | Online Games & Trivia by Sporcle
  7. Looks good, where does one buy those retrieval shackles? Also how long do you usually make your rope guides?
  8. Awesome tip "squeeze circle" is a memorable term ha ha
  9. It's important to remember that if backing up using your main line on a running bowline, should you descend then you will be effectively descending SRT, so you should allow for this in your climbing system. ie your hitch or whatever you use for DRT won't necessarily work smoothly or at all when in SRT mode. An alternative is to use an adjustable cambium saver around the stem, so you can leave your system as DRT, but keep a firm grip around the stem with the cambium saver.
  10. Looks like a fun job, what rigging/ lowering system did you use?
  11. Particularly in Scotland, so I gather
  12. Sort of relevant- I have found igniarius on Poplar up here in Edinburgh.
  13. Cheers I never thought of that. I'll just order some XTC and make one out of that. Any tips for the 16-strand eye splice?
  14. Yeah it was really easy to splice, I have some boa to try now. I want to construct a rope guide but not sure what rope would be best, I'm guessing any standard climbing line, but would stable braid or tenex be suitable? (I hear they are particularly easy to splice)
  15. Cheers. Yeah the eyes are pretty tight but they do fit a carabiner, which is handy
  16. Some great stuff in this thread! Marlow 8mm eye to eye, I can see this taking over my life now.
  17. Thanks for the comments Second and third attempts- eye to eye, Marlow 8mm double braid, class 1. Still to do the whipping, and the eyes aren't quite the same size, but went better than the first attempt. Running out of Marlow... any suggestions on an easy to splice climbing rope? Hows XTC? Ta
  18. Spliced this little eye today following the instructions on the Samson website... Marlow 8mm double braid, class 1. It was easier than I thought, but I understand that this is one of the easier ropes to splice! Couple of faults/ snags on this one so I won't be climbing on it, might see if I can test it to death at work. The bury is not as deep as it could be and the eye is a little baggy, but I dont have anything to anchor from in the house so had to bury it by hand, so to speak. Also haven't whipped it yet. Can anyone reccomend an online supplier of spicing gear, fids etc (I used a coathanger...)? Also any details on which fid length/ measurements to use for different sized ropes? Any other tips/ comments welcome
