Tree Stump Removal

Hi,

I've inherited 10 large tree stumps in my house and my budget will not stretch to the £1000+ quotes to get them leveled with a professional grinder.

I have read that one method is to apply a chemical into bored drill holes which makes the stump more porous, and therefore more conducive to burning.

Is this recommended, and if so, can you recommend a suitable product?

Many Thanks

Simon

Hello Simon , i burnt out a large dead beech stump a few weeks back there after it being discussed on a thread here. Although it would have worked well you need to get a REALLY hot fire going . The problem i had was i couldnt keep my eye on it 24/7 ( it takes a long long burn for a huge stump ) . I had the stump glowing extremely hot .... so extremely hot it wouldnt extinguish easy even after copious buckets of water . Too time consuming and dangerous imo . Try and get mechanical removal would be my shout . :001_smile:

I did a job last week where the job entailed dismatling 6 beech trees and a lime plus grind out two further stumps all between 12 to 14 inch i put 500 on for the stumps on the day of grinding i pulled up at 9 was gone by 230 went and ground out a 3ft hazel stump which cost the cliant 225 so there is an idea of prices in herefordshire . What is your location?

Thanks for the replies.

To be more precise (I'm Edinburgh based) the quote was £450 + VAT for three stumps. Two of these are 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep to ground level, and the other is half those dimensions.

I made a crude extrapolation to get £1000 for 10 stumps as the others are smaller - so I might even be underestimating the total bill based on the above.

A rough idea of how quickly Joe Blogs with no previous experience could get through one of these larger stumps with a 13/20 HP grinder from a plant hire rental would be appreciated?

Thanks

S

I would get some more quotes, what you have described there sounds nearer £500+VAT to me, the hight of the stumps is pretty irrelevant, as that can just be cut off with a saw, unless its badly contaminated.

IMO, grinding those is better left to some one with experience.

Is the access good???

thats not a bad price for those size stumps then, as for hiring one i would forget it, the hire ones are only small and taking on big stumps is hard back breaking work and if you dont know what your doing twice as hard! A big grinder cost 10k and up + running costs and wages so i don't think that a bad quote.

What you have to remember is that there is a cost for visiting the site, once there, extra stumps would be likely to add little to the overall cost. A good firm with a decent machine should be able to do 10 stumps on the same site for around the £600 mark. Thats about what I would charge, although for the bigger jobs I bring in a specialist contractor, they do a great job leave the site really tidy and I get no comebacks.

I am edinburgh area too so if you want me to put you in touch with them let me know, it would be around the £600 mark for 10 stumps though....
