You know what it's like when you run a truck (Transit in my case).

You occasionally get asked to ferry stuff about for mates who can't fit stuff in their cars etc.

Things are slack at the minute, so I don't mind doing a few favours, but I thought I'd do a few costings. What does it really cost per mile?

Diesel, depreciation, tax, insurance, tyres, servicing, MOT.

The real cost?

75 pence per mile!!!!!!!

I thought I'd got my sums wrong at first.

The favours stop NOW!

I only do 3 to 4k miles per year so my costs are probably double that Mark

They will be mate, I based it on the 10k/year I have averaged since owning the truck.

I try not to think about this sort of thing too much...

Luckily for me, old land rovers don't really depreciate too much! Brought mine for £1900 a couple of years ago and could sell it today for more than that

It's still depreciating, still taxed and still will require an mot whether you use it for favours or not.

Very true, but extra mileage increases depreciation.

Diesel alone costs me 33p/mile.

What I'm getting at is I'll still do the favours. For 75p/mile.

Thats an interesting topic for me Mark, my truck is insured for my bro to do odd bits with and my girlfriend to tow horse trailer etc. I have worked out fuel is around the 30p a mile mark but hadnt worked out depreciation, insurance, tax, annual repairs etc. Gonna have to look at the overal costs in more detail i think in the not to distant future.

If i borrow a friends van, i'll chuck them a tenner (obviously for local stuff) and pay for the fuel i use on top of that.

Do they expect it for free Mark? Some mates!
