I went to look at a london plane with twin leaders and a crack that had opened up in the wind. Climbed up the one side which I thought would stay standing while waiting for some straps to strap it together. It was still quite windy and I didn't like the feel of it, came down to tell the homeowner we'd have to comeback. While talking to the homeowner we watched the side I was tied into crash into the garage! :scared1:

We took down a beech tree on Thursday that had split down the middle.

Got called out to look at it on Monday evening and you could put your fist in the crack.

It was opening and closing by a couple of inches in the wind and it wasn't that windy at the time.

Went back first thing Tuesday and put four ratchet straps in it to hold it together till we could get to it to safely dismantle with the mewp.

I have little doubt that had we not strapped it up, it would have failed before we had got to it.

I'll put a separate thread up about it in the pictures section, later on.

I reckon it could in theory, but I think the Tree despite its defects would have been subjected to more stress in the form of wind loading than what force would be applied to the stem from the Top going out.

When I am topping out the dodgy ones,I put my back cut under the level of the face cut, then once the top is committed I keep cutting. It reduces the ammount of rearward movment and prevents the hinge hanging on.
