Hetas

I have my wood burner sitting in my hall and awaiting installation. I've had a few quotes ranging from £1800 (and comes recommended) to nearly £3000. The burner is an 'approved' one as it has the metal tags (what a faff around that was) and I can't believe it costs more than having a Vailiant boiler put in with new tank and everything else excluding rads!

Can someone tell me where to find a defintive building reg document for the install of a wood burner. I'm in half mind to do this myself and pay the couple of hundred quid for building control to certificate. Some of the HETAS approved guys who came round to quote..... well hmmm. lets just say if there is a standard to follow from HETAS, there were some different interpretations of it.

Stovesonline do a comprehensive overview to what the regs require. They also link to the part J building regs document.

Stove building regulations, UK stove building regs

I'm installling my own freestanding westfire stove using twinwall pipe and lining my chimney - going through building control.:thumbup1:

Watch the line wrap:

Planning Portal - Approved Document J

First make sure that your local BCO ( or private one such as:

Assent Building Control Ltd) will assess the installation for that price, it normally needs to be bundled in with other work to be economic.

Schemes like corgi and hetas, whilst being apparently laudable have ended up like the old restrictive practices of guilds. Nominet seems to work the same way, they make it too expensive to register other than through a member and members get a huge discount. They give a commercial advantage in that the fitter can self certify his work. It becomes a form of pyramid where the installer has to have periodic inspections by a verifier and they all have to have a minimum number of installations and attend annual seminars at large expense to maintain their credentials.

I attended a course recently about joining the HETAS scheme and most of it related to wood chip and pellet. The log part could have been done in about half and hour but I don't think it is worth joining unless you are one of the big national players.

I think were the focus should be with logs is on a standard volume - this would be much more benficial to the consumer rather than buying by the load/truck/net/dumpy bag/ton/etc etc.
