3120 or 880 the 3120 I think still comes with manual oiler wich would be a bonus but if your getting serious an extra oiler is a good idea on the bar end of your rig.

I'd agree with you on current generation saws, but I suspect the available budget may not run to them, even secondhand.

Big old Sachs Dolmar on fleabay at the mo . Not sure what capacity the engine is but it comes with a 30" bar I think . Also no chain brake so may have been on a mill before ? Both tanks are filled from the same side . ( Its not mine by the way ! )

Thanks, but I cant find it do you have the item no? By the way is £650 steep for an 084av

thanks again gethin.

I would be wary of the 084AV - very good saw for the job but parts availability is tricky, and expensive. Don't forget that you rack up the engine hours milling in a way that you don't typically when big saws spend most of their life sitting in the shed and only come out for the odd big fell/ringing up job.

What do you need for the £400 budget - powerhead alone should be fine for this (should get you a nice 075 or 076) and it's coming in to the season where the prices drop. It's unlikely to buy you an 084, but just might. If you find an MS880 for that then I would be very suspicious (and if it's genuine and there's more than one, and they're not nicked, let me know!) Afraid I can't comment on other makes. Nothing against them, I just decided life was simpler if everything was Stihl as some parts are interchangeable between models.

If you need the bar within the budget, still possible. You should expect to be budgeting for ripping chains separately.

DITTO sach dolmar 156, Jonesred 111s if you can find 1 and spares like chickens teeth to find. Any thing under 100cc don't both on the bar size you want to use.

070, 075, 076, 090 would be my choices.

The "caps on the wrong side" thing is not an issue. When working with a big bit of wood you quickly get into the habit of checking the saw after each cut - when doing oak, I tend to touch up the chain after every two cuts, so re-filling the saw is not a big deal.

070 are cheap - I've got a runner for less than £100 and a very good one for less than £200, and pattern parts are plentiful and cheap. They're simple to work on, have masses of torque and work well.

075/076 - similar, but more expensive to buy, and they are ridiculously complex to work on. So many fiddly bits to strip off, and the area around the piston is a magnet for milling dust.

090 - I don't notice much difference to the 070 in wood less than 3 feet wide. Clutch is expensive, and they aren't cheap to buy. They use more fuel.

One nice thing about the 1106 series (contra, 070, 090) is that the overspeed is the choke. You over rev it, it chokes up - which is very safe indeed. You've got to be really brutal to kill one of these.

084 / 880 - big bucks to buy, 084 parts issues. Less vibration, better fuel economy.

hi,do you mean you have them for sale or you picked them up for

this price. The problem with the filler is that she is planed to be bolted in a

carriage and unless I plan for tilting this it would be a problem but it's not the end of the world beggars can't be chosers
